Admiral William H. McRaven gave a commencement speech recently urging the audience to make their beds every morning so that the rest of the day gets done. Listen to his 10 tips on how to change the world.
I am reminded of some WRAP principles he discussed using different wording:
- If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. (Daily Maintenance Plan)
- If you want to change the world, find someone to help you paddle. (Access support.)
- If you want to change the world, measure a person by the size of their heart, not the size of their flippers. (Respect other's experience, see them as peers. Treat others with dignity, compassion, respect and high regard.)
- If you want to change the world get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward.(Keep taking Personal Responsibility for yourself.)
- If you want to change the world, don’t be afraid of the circuses. (Face your triggers.)
- If you want to change the world sometimes you have to slide down the obstacle head first. (Use your Action Plans.)
- So, If you want to change the world, don’t back down from the sharks.(Self-advocate.)
- If you want to change the world, you must be your very best in the darkest moment. (Have a Crisis Plan to follow when it gets really tough. Know what you are like when you are feeling well.)
- So, if you want to change the world, start singing when you’re up to your neck in mud.(Utilize your Wellness Tools.)
- If you want to change the world don’t ever, ever ring the bell. (Keep your hope alive. Don't ever give up and stop using your WRAP.)
